The effect of food storage in a refrigerator on human health
Food storage is an issue that we rarely pay attention to. Meanwhile, it is extremely important, both for health and hygiene reasons. Knowing the rules of storing food, we can avoid many unpleasant health surprises. So how do you organize your food in the fridge and what rules to follow?
Food storage rules
In order to take full advantage of the health benefits of products stored in the fridge, they must be stored properly. Let us follow the three main principles.
The first one is the proper placement of products on the appropriate shelves. The second – applying the right temperature, and the third – not exceeding the expiry dates on the packaging. Even the correct storage of products that are after the expiration date may result in food poisoning and gastrointestinal discomfort.
Where to store
The temperature in the fridge varies depending on the place. The warmest is usually on the door, and the coldest on the bottom and the top shelves. What and where should we keep?
3-4 degrees Celsius – within such limits the temperature on the fridge door fluctuates. We store all those products there that do not require intensive cooling. These can be, for example, sauces, mayonnaise, mustards, as well as butter or cheese. On the lower door shelves, you can also set oil bottles.
At the bottom of the refrigerator, there are usually two drawers. They can be designed for storing fruit and vegetables. It is worth choosing a model of the device, in which at the bottom will be limited moisture. Too high its level may cause mold on the plants.
On the upper shelves of the refrigerator, there is a temperature of about 2-3 degrees Celsius. It’s a good place for jams and ready-made products. In turn, the middle shelves are usually even cooler. We should keep on them what has a short shelf life. Talk about cold cuts, dairy products, eggs. We store them no longer than a few days after opening the package.
Bottom shelves are the coolest, some models of refrigerators even have temperature indicators in such places. Store meat and fish on them. It should be noted here that these products should be washed, dried and put in a container before being put in the fridge. They can be up to 3 months in the freezer.
After buying a refrigerator, it is very important to set the temperature properly. It should be optimally adjusted, i.e. so that the food is not covered with a layer of ice or too warm. That is why it is worth choosing such models of refrigerators that have the NoFrost function, which prevents the frost from settling in the freezer, as well as the Super Cool and Super Freeze option, which allow quick cooling and freezing of large amounts of food. The electronic temperature control and the open door alarm will also be an advantage.
An arrangement, dates of consumption
An important issue is also the proper distribution of products. Storing aromatic sausage next to a piece of cake will cause it to pass through the smell of meat. In turn, raw meat should not lie next to vegetables or fruit.
Compulsory element of care for proper storage of food is to control the date of consumption of various products. How to do it? The easiest way is to stick to the principle of “what comes first, first comes out”. In practice, this means that products with the longest expiration date we put in the deepest, and those with the shortest – in view. The idea is to eat the second as soon as possible, because the effects of the product “after the deadline” may be deplorable.
Half bad, if we eat yogurt or cheese, whose date ended the day before. We will get a slight stomach upset, and maybe we will not be able to do anything. However, eating stale meat or sausage may end up at the emergency room.
